Nathan Frenze, Temple Ambler Field Station Research Intern

We are continuing our series of videos introducing you to the Temple Ambler Field Station Research Interns as they share insights into their research and their experiences on campus.

For Nathan Frenze, a senior in Ecology, Biodiversity and Evolution the College of Science and Technology, it was childhood experiences with nature that informed his decision to pursue his major.

"I like understanding the world around us. I definitely want to do more research in the future so I thought working with the Field Station would be a great first step to gain experience," he said. "Right now in the Field Station, we're working with seed traps and seeing which species are growing in the wind-disturbed forest (the Temple Forest Observatory)."

For his personal Field Station project, Frenze is studying "deer browsing in relation to obstruction."

"The goal there is to see if deer are avoiding certain areas or favoring other areas of the forest in the TFO after the tornado caused so many downed trees. They might avoid certain areas if they feel corralled in," he said. "I think one of the biggest benefits of hands-on experience is being out there and seeing if this type of work is the right fit for you. For me, when I first came out here, it energized me and made me want to do more — getting to experience it firsthand yourself is invaluable."

Students gain advanced training by engaging in hands-on research internships that bring alive the excitement of science through an inquiry-based experience. Student interns work alongside researchers in the field to support ongoing projects and can develop investigations of their own.

Students interested in becoming a Field Station Research Intern, should reach out to the Temple Ambler Field Station at fieldstation@temple.edu with their name, why they are interested in working with the Field Station, current transcripts, and current resume.
