Introduction
Hi everyone, my name is Kristen Young and I am one of the advisors with the Division of University Studies.
Is it OK to be Undeclared?
One of the main questions we get is, is it okay to be undeclared? And the answer is a resounding yes. There are over 140 majors at Temple. Yes 140! And on average students change their major two to three times over the course of their college career. So even if your friends think they have their lives figured out and know exactly what they want to major in, they actually will probably change their major at least once in their college career. And then also we have you explore a lot of your options. Our hope is that once you’ve explored the options available to you, you’ll be able to confidently declare your major.
Why DUS?
So why DUS? Well, we provide academic counseling to help you develop an action plan. We teach you to have an active role in the major exploration process. So instead of just giving you the four or five classes that you should take each semester, we have you explore what you're interested in, what you would like to do as a career, and we make sure that you’re the one that’s in charge of your time here at Temple. We're also knowledgeable on all degree programs and requirements. We also want to make sure that you feel connected and confident in what Temple has to offer, so we help you navigate campus resources as well.
The DUS Advantage
But what is the DUS advantage? Glad you asked. Let's say that you're interested in a major in the Fox School of Business. DUS has access to seven of the introductory courses that Fox has to offer and those are restricted just to DUS and Fox students. So, if you're interested in Fox but you're still a College of Public Health major, you would actually be unable to take these courses, whereas if you were a DUS student, you'd be able to take them. We also have one of the cheapest tuition rates at Temple. So you can take classes in your desired major but still pay the DUS tuition rate, saving money. We also have specific programs designed for undeclared students that you can participate in, a couple that come to mind are peer mentors and the Major Exploration Academy.
