Introduction

Hello my name is Kate Markowitz I am the Director of Enrollment Management at the Fox School of Business at Temple University.  Today I want to talk to you about the Fox School of Business and how it connects to the Ambler Campus.

Fox By the Numbers

A little about the Fox School of Business. At Temple University we are one of the largest schools and colleges on the campus.  We have just over 6,300 students and we have over 200 faculty members that are teaching our students full time.  These faculty members are doing research as well as teaching and they make up 80% of our total faculty. In addition, to that we have about 20% of our faculty that are adjuncts and these are those professionals that are working in the field have at least a master’s degree and teach one or two courses.  So, students at Fox will have the ability to not only take classes from those who that are creating the next wave and creating these different sort of learning paths. You also seeing how that directly impacts the real world.

Students will also have the ability to be a part of one of our 30 plus student professional organizations.  These organizations are attached to at least one of the majors or there general business which means students have the ability to interact with guest speakers from the field, take field trips to different locations, go to professional conferences and have the ability to start their professional network from the time they start Fox.  Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 1:00 no business courses are taught specifically so these student professional organizations have a place to meet and also have a time that they came meet.  In this new virtual environment our student organizations have now been able to access national and international guest speakers for these types of these meetings. So students regardless of where they are will be able to take part in these types of meetings.

At the Ambler campus specifically you’re able to start anyone of our 16 majors at that campus. Some majors and you will see on the next slide can be completed for the most part on the campus with some additional help from online courses.

We also have the ability to study abroad.  At Temple University we have two campus one in Rome and one in Tokyo.  If you are student that wants to go abroad but doesn’t want to go to that location.  We are one of 17 schools in the United States with a cyber grant so we will have locations that you can work with study abroad and the cyber office to figure out where you going to go, how you are going to go and how those credits are going to come in and out. For students that might be interested in just doing a short term study abroad. We also have what’s called a global immersion programs these are one to two weeks programs that will go for cultural as well as business visits while you are abroad.  They change every single semester based on the faculty member leading. So depending on your major there might be one that will suit your interests and field of study. Some recent ones have included ones to Cambodia and also ones to Spain. So there is a wide variety of how you can study abroad.

Majors

At the Fox School of Business I mentioned that we have 16 majors.  Four of those majors which are highlighted Accounting, Business Management, Human Resource Management and Marketing can be completed with multiple courses on the Ambler Campus. And the other courses you can take online or you can come to the Main Campus and take those.   For those that are starting a business program our most popular major is Business Undecided.  You have until your first 60 credits usually the end of your sophomore year before you need to make a decision as to what major you would like.  Your advising from 0-60 credits will be based on making sure that you are taking the courses the general education courses as well as the business core courses that you will need to be the foundation for major specific courses.  So during that the first couple of years besides taking those non business courses you will also be taking the intro courses to each one of these different majors. So by the time you reach 60 credits you will have a real good understanding of what you would like to do and how you would like to proceed.   If you are interested in one or two of these majors you can actually double major within the Fox School of Business and still graduate in 4 years. You also have the ability to pick from one of our 24 minors as well.

Center for Student Professional Development

In addition to the academics a huge part of what we do at the Fox School of Business is help you make that transition from business student to business professional.  And we have an office specifically designed to help you with that and that office is the Center for Student Professional Development.  Temple University has a Career Center the Fox School of Business has this center that students can access both of those.  And with the Center for Student Professional Development they offer a variety of services and even teach one of those core business courses Professional Development Strategies.

They offer 1on1 career development coaching.  The course that I mentioned that is part of the core and then they also have stand-alone workshops.  So what gets covered in that course might be covered very quickly.  They will have stand-alone workshops that go in more depth on those topics.

We also have a job search and job posting board called Handshake and this is where students once they go through the getting started workshops they can actually go and look at the opportunities that are being posted on that job board.

The employer network and recruiting events even online we have the ability to connect with employers and students and still have that meaningful interaction. They also can help you with those job search questions that you might have they will help you with dress code and all of those softer skills of business that are not taught in any specific class.

If you notice to the right there is this model when it says continuous improvement you should picture yourself as that person and they are going to teach you and help you manage your impressions both verbal and non-verbal your personal development and being able to research the career you that you truly want. And they are going to show you how your different engagement outside of the classroom will impact you on how you are moving through this cycle. And the goal is for you again to make that transition from business student to business professional.

SPOS + CSPD = 90% Placement Rate!

So in recent years those students that have participated in our student professional organizations as well as with our CSPD for the class of 2019 had a placement rate of over 90%.  So those students that were seeking full time employment 90% of them that graduated received an offer within six months of graduation.
