Shaylen Schnepp, Temple Ambler Field Station Research Intern

We are continuing our series of videos introducing you to the Temple Ambler Field Station Research Interns as they share insights into their research and their experiences on campus.

"When I was in my senior year of high school, I really didn't know what I wanted to do. I took an AP Environmental Science course and I really enjoyed it," said Shaylen Schnepp, a senior Environmental Science major in the College of Science and Technology. "I decided to take a chance and pursue it as a major in college."

A transfer student, Schnepp said, he had not previous research experience or internships. Working with the Temple Ambler Field Station was the perfect opportunity to change that, he said.

"The big project that we've been working on is seed collection and identification in a wind-disturbed forest (Temple Forest Observatory)," he said. We collect the seed and identify them to get an idea of the composition of the species within our forest."

Schnepp said his goal with the Field Station "is to contribute as much as I can."

"I like gaining an understanding and being involved in everything that is going on at the Field Station," he said. "The benefit of hands-on experience, since I'm still figuring out exactly what I want to do, is that it provides a very strong base line in field work especially. There is field work involved in many different careers within my major so I think it really helps to provide a very strong foundation."

Students gain advanced training by engaging in hands-on research internships that bring alive the excitement of science through an inquiry-based experience. Student interns work alongside researchers in the field to support ongoing projects and can develop investigations of their own.

Students interested in becoming a Field Station Research Intern, should reach out to the Temple Ambler Field Station at fieldstation@temple.edu with their name, why they are interested in working with the Field Station, current transcripts, and current resume.
